OUTSOURCING OF CANADIAN OPERATIONS

Dear Brothers & Sisters:

On February 20, 2014 Representatives of Transportation District 140 met with United Airlines Labour Relations. The Company advised the Union of their intention to outsource their Canadian operations, effective May 1, 2014.

The Company has served termination notice to the Minister of Labour. However, the notice period does not meet the sixteen (16) week requirement under the Canada Labour Code as such the Company advised us today that they will continue the payment of wages beyond May 1, 2014 to the expiration of the required notice period.

The Collective Agreement requires the Company to provide the Union with at least ninety (90) days notice of any decision to contract out any or all of the work of the Bargaining Unit or to discontinue operations. They are further compelled to negotiate with the Union the protections to be afforded to employees who are affected, including additional protection, severance and benefits.

Further the Company must provide the Union with all relevant financial and costing documentation and meet with the Union to review viable alternatives which the Union may wish to propose to maintain the work within the Bargaining Unit.

The IAMAW has great loyalty to our Members employed by United Airlines and will take all steps necessary to protect your rights and challenge the Company’s decision to outsource our work.

Transportation District 140 Representatives are in the process of scheduling meetings with the Company in order to ensure our Collective Agreement and legal rights are protected.

As more information becomes available, we will communicate with the affected Membership.

In Solidarity,

Fred Hospes,
President & Directing General Chairperson

Keith Aiken,
General Chairperson

Tania Canniff, General Chairperson

Transportation District 140, IAMAW
