The airline is selling off the future of the Aircraft Maintenance industry in Canada.
At this time, the Conservative MPs are saying in the House of Commons that they have assurances from Air Canada that there will be no jobs lost as the result of the sale of its Maintenance department.
This is not the truth. Aveos, the company that purchased this department from Air Canada, has made it very clear that it does not intend to be in the Heavy Maintenance business after 2013.
What this means is that over 4,000 people could lose their jobs!
The employees of Air Canada have demonstrated their commitment to the survival of the company by taking huge cuts in their pay and benefits for almost a full decade.
The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAMAW) believes that the Harper Government must concretely demonstrate its commitment to the employees of Air Canada and their families.
The IAMAW believes that the Harper Government must not only enforce the provisions of the ACPPA, but also amend the act to provide that Air Canada must also maintain its Heavy Maintenance base in Vancouver.
We urge all IAMAW members to contact or meet with their MP and demand the Government to do what is right and enforce the Air Canada Act.
