Low-Cost Carrier – Air Canada Vacations
Dear Sisters and Brothers:
On November 29, General Vice President Dave Ritchie, Airline Coordinator Carlos DaCosta, General Chairperson Fred Hospes and I attended meetings with Mr. Klaus Goersch, Chief Operating Officer of Air Canada and Mr. Michael Friisdahl, Chief Executive Officer of the new Air Canada Low-Cost Carrier (LCC) and Air Canada Vacations.
Mr. Goersch told the IAMAW that he looked forward to working with us and that his focus at this time is improving the On-Time Performance (OTP) of the airline.
Mr. Friisdahl informed us that he will be responsible for combining the business of Air Canada Vacations with the new LCC.
The goal is to grow the business in markets/destinations in which the Air Canada mainline could not be competitive prior to this initiative.
The initial plan will include four aircraft – two 767s and two Airbus 319s to be taken from the mainline and rebranded to the LCC. The name, colours, etc. are to be announced on December 18. As
Air Canada takes delivery of new 777s and 787s, more aircraft will be transferred to the LCC.
It has been reported that Air Canada’s CEO, Calin Rovinescu, has said in his town hall meetings that the work of the LCC will be outsourced. When asked about this, Mr. Friisdahl informed us that “in the beginning, the work will be outsourced to Air Canada.” He intends to keep the work with Air Canada until such time it’s no longer feasible to do so.
Mr. Friisdahl committed to further discussions with the IAMAW when the need arises or when it is appropriate.
