TO ALL IAMAW MEMBERS AIR CANADA – TMOS NEGOTIATIONS UPDATE
Dear Brothers and Sisters,
Your Negotiations Committee convened for a scheduled two weeks of bargaining with the company from September 12 – 23, 2022 in Toronto.
It was a disappointing, though not surprising, exercise in futility. The company continued to display no real interest in meaningful bargaining. Other than the first few days at the opening of the bargaining session, there was very little in the way of actual face time with the company or discussion on the big issues. While the Airports group was able to reach agreement on some minor items, the Tech Ops group was kept in limbo waiting for promised financial data and figures that ultimately were never provided. Global or items common to both Airports and Tech Ops were discussed briefly in the early days, but the company showed no willingness thereafter to improve anything of real value to the entire membership.
After several days of subtle hints and suggestions, the company declared that further bargaining was a waste of time and that we should proceed to the mediation phase of negotiation ahead of final arbitration. This Committee, through a careful analysis of the survey results and hearing your voices on the floor, is cognizant of and respects your wants, needs and desires. Though your Negotiation Committee was, and remains, prepared to work as long as it takes to achieve gains for the membership, we cannot negotiate alone at the table.
The Negotiation Committee Chairman has been in talks with the company with regards to the selection of a mutually satisfactory Arbitrator to complete the process. As of the writing of this bulletin, the company has not furnished us with a name or names they would consider. Once an Arbitrator has been established, dates for the 15 days of mediation (as provided for in Appendix XXXXIV of the Collective Agreement) can be coordinated among the 3 parties. We will advise the membership as soon as the logistics and scheduling have been finalized.
As ever, we thank you for your support and patience in this long and arduous process. Let us all remain united and focused.
In solidarity,
Steve Prinz
