TO ALL IAMAW MEMBERS AIR CANADA – TMOS
RE: CHANGES TO THE CANADA LABOUR CODE
Dear Brothers & Sisters,
The District 140 has been advised that certain moratoriums that were issued by the Federal Labor Minister have expired for the aviation sector and these code provisions have now come into effect. Notably, Employers under the Canada Labor Code must now issue a lunch break of 30 minutes for every 5 hours of work.
The District 140 was advised by Air Canada that because of this, they will be unilaterally extending everyone’s shift by 30 minutes UNPAID. The Union finds this unilateral action to modify your working hours completely abysmal and contrary to provisions that are supposed to better your working condition and benefit you, the workers. With assistance from the Grand Lodge, we have contacted the Federal Labor Minister and have voiced our disagreement with the company’s continued pattern of excess and abuse. Minister Mackinnon’s office has yet to give its position on whether or not they support Air Canada’s grotesque behavior.
These changes are supposed to start taking effect for the most part within the planned schedule changes that traditionally take place in the fall (which varies from department to department). This means some of you will be working 8 hours paid for 8 hours while others will be working 8.5 hours for 8 hours of pay. Only Air Canada management can find a way to pervert positive labor change to punish you and your families.
