TO ALL MEMBERS OF THE IAMAW WORKING FOR AVEOS –
CLERICAL AND MAINTENANCE EMPLOYEES
Layoffs
Dear brothers and sisters:
Aveos informed the Union today that it is going to proceed with layoffs across the system. The dates of these layoffs have not yet been confirmed.
Some of these layoffs are deemed temporary in nature, while others are considered permanent.
Unless there is an end date to these layoffs, the Union considers that the layoffs are all permanent in nature and, as such, the Company should supply notice to the Minister of Labour and allow us 16 weeks’ notice to carry out mitigation programs.
The Union also contends that, in certain cases, some categories and classifications in various cities will be eliminated as a result of these layoffs.
The District has requested a meeting with Aveos representatives to better understand the reason for these layoffs. When we attended the last Gantt meeting, the shortfall of work identified at the time was to occur in the summer months. It does not justify the number of layoffs that we were informed of today.
To deal with all these layoffs, we will also need to meet with Aveos to discuss mitigations and bumping processes.
A meeting has been scheduled between District Lodge 140 and Martin Teplitsky, the chief arbitrator, on February 15th, to obtain further clarification on the no-layoff clauses as they relate to the outsourcing of maintenance work on aircraft, engines and landing gears.
As we do not see the rationale or the justification for the Company’s actions, we will be challenging this entire layoff process.
We will keep you informed.
In solidarity,
Fred Hospes
