TO ALL IAMAW AIR CANADA MEMBERSHIP
IAM DISTRICT 140 FULLY SUPPORTS AIR CANADA’S PILOTS
Dear Sisters, Brothers and Siblings,
As you are aware, Air Canada’s Pilots, represented by the Airline Pilots Association (ALPA), are in a legal strike position as of September 17, 2024. The Pilots have highlighted the need for wage parity with their American counterparts and have shown incredible solidarity throughout this difficult round of negotiations. The IAM fully supports ALPA in its efforts to achieve fair compensation in the airline industry.
Air Canada has achieved unprecedented success over the past ten years, due in large part to all Unions entering into long-term Collective Agreements with the company. These agreements provided labour stability and fixed labour costs which became valuable to the company during a period of high inflationary pressures. These long- term agreements allowed the company to rebound quickly after the pandemic.
In the United States, the IAM has negotiated several industry leading Collective Agreements for airport workers on the ramp, in cargo, technical operations, and customer service. These airlines include American, United, Alaska and Hawaiian. Our IAM Members across the border are earning wage levels much higher than that of our Canadian Membership.
The Pilots’ fight is our fight. As airport workers we deserve fair compensation and wage levels that match the efforts of our labour and contribution to the success of this airline. Fortunately, we will have our rightful turn at the bargaining table too and so will our counterparts.
We understand the concerns and uncertainty of our Membership and the Union has been in contact with management teams within the District to limit the impact to our Membership.
As more information becomes available, we will notify you with the updates.
In solidarity,
