MANDATORY OVERTIME
It has come to the attention of the Cabins Shop Committee that over the last several evenings, Management has initiated mandatory overtime protocols. As a reminder, any overtime that is required to be worked on an involuntary basis is subjected to provisions in the CBA, specifically:
Article 10.02.07.05
“Where the overtime requirement is not in conjunction with a shift, the Supervisor will first endeavour to canvass all qualified employees on the appropriate overtime list. In the event the requirement is not filled by this process, unless otherwise agreed to locally, the employees on the appropriate overtime list who are at work on the shift preceding the commencement of the overtime, will be required to work.”
We want to ensure that all members are aware of their rights and protections under the CBA. If management is not adhering to the proper procedures when enforcing mandatory overtime, we encourage members to report such instances to the Shop Committee immediately. Our union exists to uphold fair and equitable treatment for all employees, and we will take appropriate steps to address any violations of our negotiated agreement.
Furthermore, we strongly urge management to engage in proper planning and workforce allocation to mitigate the need for excessive mandatory overtime. Chronic reliance on “forced” overtime is not a sustainable solution and negatively impacts employee well-being, work-life balance, and overall job satisfaction.
If you have concerns regarding recent mandatory overtime requirements, please don’t hesitate to reach out. We are committed to advocating for your rights and ensuring that all contractual obligations are met.
In solidarity,
Cabins Shop Committee
