Winter Bid Impasse
The Shift Bid Committee met with the company yesterday to hold discussions regarding the winter shift bid. It is apparent that the company has decided to slash the number of bid lines this coming bid as opposed to the number of bid lines on last winter’s bid. The company is of the opinion it is their “right” and solely their right to establish the manpower requirements for the operation. Because it is your “right” does not necessarily make it “RIGHT”.
Less bid lines simply means more relief lines. We could understand the company reducing the number of bid lines if they were laying people off, we do not believe this to be the case. Less bid lines means more relief lines which simply makes it easier for the company to offer RO and LOA’s. The Union has posted bulletins that accepting RO and LOA’s could cause problems in the future. Unfortunately, it seems the crows have come home to roost.
As per the collective agreement, when we come to an impasse regarding the shift bid, it now gets elevated to the 3rd level, that is, the General Chairperson and Labour Relations.
